For more than sixty years, the historical re-enactment of Good Friday has been one of the most significant cultural and religious traditions of Fossato di Vico, a medieval village nestled in the Umbrian Apennines. Every year during Holy Week, the streets, churches and historic squares of the village become the stage for a living representation of the Passion of Christ, bringing together local residents, volunteers and visitors in a shared experience of remembrance, faith and community.

The performance follows the final moments of Christ’s life, from the Last Supper and the Trial before Pilate to the Crucifixion and the Deposition. Rather than taking place on a conventional stage, each scene unfolds throughout the medieval centre of Fossato di Vico, where the historic architecture and atmosphere create an authentic setting that strengthens the emotional and symbolic impact of the event. The village itself becomes an integral part of the story, connecting local heritage with one of the most important traditions of the Christian calendar.

Organised by the Pro Loco of Fossato di Vico, with the patronage of the Municipality of Fossato di Vico, the re-enactment is made possible through the dedication of dozens of volunteers. Community members of different generations contribute their time and skills to preparing costumes, staging scenes, portraying historical figures and ensuring the continuity of the tradition. Their commitment demonstrates how intangible cultural heritage is preserved through active participation and the transmission of knowledge from one generation to the next.

Today, the Good Friday Historical Re-enactment represents far more than an annual religious celebration. It is a living expression of local identity, collective memory and community spirit. By preserving this tradition, the people of Fossato di Vico continue to strengthen the connection between past and present, ensuring that their cultural heritage remains a meaningful part of everyday community life while offering visitors an authentic experience of the village’s history, values and Sense of Place.
