Rapone – The Fairy Tale Village
Italy
Description:
Rapone, a small village in Basilicata, has developed a distinctive cultural identity by preserving and creatively reimagining its rich oral storytelling tradition—so deep-rooted and vital that it inspired Giovan Battista Basile, the father of the literary fairy tale. Basile drew from the folk tales of southern Italy, including those from the Rapone area, for his masterpiece Lo Cunto de li Cunti (The Tale of Tales), a foundational text, written in 1600, that later influenced Perrault, Andersen, and the Brothers Grimm. Rapone transformed local folklore into an immersive cultural and tourism experience. Visitors can explore the Path of the Five Fairy Tales, multimedia installations, a storytelling museum, thematic artistic routes, murals, and interactive educational spaces. Annual festivals, performances, and community activities further animate the village, creating a living environment where local stories continue to evolve through community participation and artistic creativity. The initiative successfully combines heritage preservation, innovation, and tourism development.
Why is relevant to the project ?
Rapone represents an excellent example of how intangible cultural heritage can be transformed into a community-based tourism product. The initiative strengthens local identity, encourages intergenerational transmission of stories and traditions, promotes community engagement, and uses creative and digital tools to make cultural heritage accessible to wider audiences. It offers an inspiring model for connecting tradition, innovation, and sustainable rural tourism.
