Recognized by UNESCO in 2010 as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Flamenco combines singing (cante), dance (baile), and guitar music (toque) into a powerful form of artistic and emotional expression. Traditionally transmitted through families, local communities, and informal learning spaces, Flamenco continues to thrive today through conservatories, cultural foundations, neighborhood associations, and peñas flamencas across cities such as Seville, Granada, and Jerez de la Frontera. The practice connects generations through shared performance, storytelling, rhythm, and memory, while also adapting to contemporary realities through digital platforms, online performances, and educational initiatives. Flamenco represents a living heritage that continues to evolve while preserving its cultural roots and community significance.
Why is relevant to the project ?
Flamenco is highly relevant to the #ASenseofEU project because it demonstrates how intangible cultural heritage can strengthen intergenerational learning, community engagement, and Sense of Place. The tradition is transmitted through direct interaction between elders and younger generations, both in formal educational settings and informal community spaces such as peñas flamencas. Flamenco also shows how cultural heritage can promote social inclusion, emotional expression, and civic identity, particularly among disadvantaged or marginalized communities. In addition, the integration of digital tools, virtual performances, and online learning platforms highlights how traditional cultural practices can remain accessible and relevant in the digital age. The practice offers a strong example of how heritage can connect memory, identity, creativity, and participation within contemporary European communities.
