The Labour Memories of the Tiber initiative, developed within the Ecomuseo del Tevere, preserves and promotes the intangible cultural heritage of the rural communities living along the Tiber River in Umbria, Italy. Through a network of thematic heritage trails, visitors discover the traditional occupations that once shaped everyday life along the river, including washerwomen, ferrymen, and timber gatherers.
The initiative combines guided walks, oral storytelling, live demonstrations, and community participation to reconnect people with the cultural landscapes of the Tiber Valley. Complementing these physical experiences, the Ecomuseum’s multimedia archive preserves historical photographs, videos, and interviews with elderly community members, ensuring that local memories, traditional skills, and lived experiences remain accessible for future generations. By involving volunteers, local historians, and residents in documenting and sharing this heritage, the project strengthens community identity while promoting sustainable rural tourism and appreciation of local cultural landscapes.
