Description:
The Corsa delle Botti (Barrel Race) is an event that has been held in Costacciaro since 1991 and celebrates the wine-making season through the San Martino Trophy.
The competition consists of a race featuring two barrels that roll around an axis to which a rudder is attached, pulled by a team of young people called “bottaioli.” Each team also includes a head “bottaiolo,” an innkeeper, and a race director. The two barrels and their respective teams represent the town of Costacciaro itself, with the Hostaria de la Porta, and
the surrounding hamlets, specifically Villa Col de’ Canali, with the Hostaria de la Rocca. The race consists of two timed heats, and victory goes to the team that achieves the best overall time.
A rich program of events surrounds the race, including the opening of the traditional Hostarie, a parade of ancient crafts, and social gatherings featuring typical products of the San Martino season, such as chestnuts and new wine.
Every year, the event involves numerous volunteers, associations, and residents, and attracts visitors from neighboring areas as well, serving as an important occasion for community gathering and helping to preserve and pass on the traditions, identity, and intangible cultural heritage of the Costacciaro community.
