The Harp of Viggiano: Revival of a Lucanian Musical Tradition

Italy

Description:

The Harp of Viggiano is a unique musical tradition originating in the rural town of Viggiano, Basilicata. During the nineteenth century, local harpists travelled throughout Europe and the Americas as street musicians, becoming cultural ambassadors of their territory. After a period of decline, the tradition has been successfully revitalised through community-led initiatives focused on safeguarding local heritage. Activities include the recovery of traditional harp-making techniques, the transmission of musical repertoires, educational programmes, and cultural events such as concerts and festivals. Today, the Viggianese harp represents an important symbol of local identity and cultural continuity, attracting visitors interested in authentic cultural experiences and contributing to the development of sustainable cultural tourism in the region.
